Well, a line is an infinite series of points. Geometrically it has length, but no width. A line is the connection between two points or the path of an already moving point. Lines show direction and movement. The eye follows it as a path leading to something else. Lines can separate things in design, but lines can also pull things together.
As a Designer we have a Toolbox. This toolbox is made up of a few things that include Lines, Shapes, Mass, Texture, and Color. I will go into details on a later date. As for now when we use all the elements in this Toolbox harmoniously it can really enhance the viewers senses to your designs. It’s the nitty gritty of design and what it all boils down to.
Hello there Son/Daughter. As of right now I follow about 450+ people. I usually follow anyone who follows me back. Since if I’m their DAD it’s only fair for me to follow them back. Don’t you agree? As for your other question. I just passed 200 followers the other day. I’m satisfied with my progress. I didn’t expect to get big overnight. I just wish to become popular to educate all current/aspiring Designers out there. Even if it’s 2 followers a day. If you or anyone else reading this know of any Design related promotional sites please send me a message.
Love,
DAD
You must always know your Target Audience. No matter what you’re doing in this Industry. There will always be one. It’s the demographic of people your designs are meant to hit home to. If you make a design that is about trucks for a food magazine chances are no one who reads that food magazine will even consider buying that truck. However, if you place it in a men fitness magazine it is much more likely to hit your Target Audience. Never forget about who your Target Audience is. It becomes very important for Color, Typography Choices, and even the over Design itself.
Everyone goes through a funk. It’s normal for us Designers. The solution? Just to work right through it. Try different mediums such as stencil art, drawing, reading, writing, or spend a day with a little kid. (They have wonderful imagination. They are not yet plagued by what the world has set for us up to see. There is actually a child I show my Designs to. He tells me he can do much better. This is coming from a child who for him a tree is not a tree. It’s a life with little babies that take in bad air.) Another good way is like I said in Tip # 31. Get out of your comfort zone. It really brings new views to the platform. Even replicating another Designer and see what process they go through it sometimes fun and unique. Since you’re in their mind and not in yours.
Also this video is a pretty neat one.

Hmmm There is a pretty popular video that is known for this sort of thing. Although it might be a bit different than a funk.

I think that will be quite helpful. Another way to get out of a funk that has helped me and others is to work out of your medium. What I mean by this is to do something that you are not too familiar with or have lost touch with. For me it’s usually doing some stencil art, free hand drawing, and running DAD (Since it brings me back to all the basic elements of design that people usually forget about myself included). Another way is like I said in Tip # 31. Get out of your comfort zone. It really brings new views to the platform. If you need anything more you know you can always just ask.
Your Welcome Son. -Grin-

Yes and No. As far as Design goes there are no rules. “But didn’t you just say yes?” Yes I did. “So what’re you getting at here DAD?” There are no set rules for design because that would mean that all designs are of equal value and visually successful. However, we all know this is not true. These rules are much more Guidelines than anything else. The reason we have them are to help assists successful designs. This doesn’t mean that you as a designer are limited to abide by them.
Never shut your mind off from anything. Having an open mind and willingness to experiment with color ideas, concepts, hierarchy, etc. Don’t just get attached on your first piece of work. Change it up; you can surprise yourself at the results. Be prepared to look at your design from different mindsets and don’t just marry your first design.
Try and create your own material. Don’t rely on what already exists, even though most of the times it’s easier and cheaper. Nothing is more unsatisfying than a commonly used stock picture that shows up everywhere on the internet. Create what you need. However, understand your limits! Don’t go diving into that volcano crater for that texture. Use what you can to your advantage.
Brainstorming could be you or a group of people problem-solving in a way which you or other members share ideas, solutions, concepts, etc. It generates a large number of ideas for the solution. Nothing is shut down, and everything is accepted. Then the elimination process begins.
Typography is ultimately used to get a message out through the use of Type. It tells us a lot about everything in the world. It’s not mostly thought about, but when executed correctly it could work wonders. There are many ways to do it, and once you find the way that works you will see the result.
Widows, Orphans, and Rivers are major problems in type. As a designer if you notice that there is an interrupted word or word fragment on a line at the end of a paragraph or column you’ve now met a Widow. If you notice one at the top of a column or page you’ve just met her Orphan. Rivers are gaps that run through paragraphs of type that link into a form of negative space.
Lorem Ipsum is fake dummy body copy. When working somewhere where the body copy is not yet ready fill it with lorem ipsum. It provides a good solid block of text that can help you work out your body copy before the real stuff comes along.
Body Copy is sometimes a designer’s worst nightmare, unless you can maneuver Body Copy to your will. That’s the goal for us all. Is for our body copy to also compliment our design. Body copy will always be there. You might as well get used to it. It will almost always pose challenges to your design.
